Hello my loves! Sorry for my lack of posts as of late; my laptop charger died out on me but my wonderful father fixed it! Did you know Macbook chargers are $79?! Insane! Luckily he’s great with electrical stuff (… so technical of me) and saved me a lot of money 🙂
So needless to say, I am back! ❤
Today I wanted to talk about and do a quick review of e.l.f.’s HD powder.. Now, I can’t compare it to higher end versions because I’ve always been too cheap to try them out but I have heard comparisons of this to the Makeup Forever HD Microfinish Powder, which is a whopping $34… (For fairly good reason, I am sure)… MUFE is absolutely amazing! But, for those of us on a tight budget…. Yeah… That’s a lot of money.
e.l.f’s HD powder costs only $6!!!! It comes in three shades – Translucent, Shimmer, and a Corrective Yellow shade.
The shade I have is Translucent, although oddly enough the name sticker on the bottom says Sheer… But nonetheless, it’s translucent.
We’ll start with the packaging:
It’s pretty terrible… Big, bulky and messy…… Sounds like some men I know. Badumbum…. Terrible joke bahahaha
Although with any HD/setting powder, no matter the price, it’s hard to keep it from getting all over. I do wish the packaging was less bulky but… It’s only $6 so very hard to complain.
When you first get this, there is a sticker over the holes that you pull off. As you can see at the top, I only removed a very small section. That way not as much product can get out (and all over the place).. I recommend you do that to prevent a huge mess.
It’s a very finely milled powder, you need VERY little and it must be blended out to prevent it from looking white. Also, although this does not seem to contain any SPF – it can cause the dreaded white ghost face in flash photography. You must use VERY little if you use it to set your foundation, and even then it isn’t guaranteed that it won’t cause flashback…. And for that reason, I only use this to set under my eyes.. I’d rather be safe than sorry, know what I mean? Of course you can use it to set foundation, it’s a super soft powder and it does a great job at setting makeup.. But I wouldn’t be honest if I didn’t mention the flashback issue 🙂
* I have never had a problem with this breaking me out! *
I find that this works great when you apply it under your eyes, not only to set concealer but also to prevent shadow, liner and mascara from smudging and running. By the end of a long day, no matter what I use, I tend to get a lot of smudging under my eyes – the raccoon eye effect – so I love using this to prevent that from happening.
The brush I use:
Sedona Lace’s mini EB 13 – this comes in the free 4 eyeshadow palette you typically receive whenever you order from them. Just a small version of their EB 13, it’s a synthetic brush that is very soft and fluffy. I will dip this in the HD powder, TAP IT OFF! and then dab this under my eyes, from the inner corner all the way out, also concentrating on the outer corner. If I’m wearing winged liner, I make sure to go right under it and set; that helps to keep it from running whenever your eyes get watery… After I apply this, I’ll take a large fluffy face brush and just sweep it under my eyes to remove any excess product and that also helps to keep any flashback from occurring.

Overall, I’ve been enjoying this powder. I love that I can look in the mirror after a long day of wearing makeup and see no raccoon eyes! I think we’ve all had those days where you look in the mirror and wonder, “How long have I been walking around like this?! Why did no one tell me half of my eye makeup is now UNDER my eyes!”… Yes, the packaging isn’t great and it can get messy, but it’s $6 and it works! I definitely recommend this, to anyone looking for a cheap setting powder that works well, and especially if you have trouble with your eye makeup running.
